Margate (band)

Margate is a 3-piece melodic rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2003, the band performs in the Southern California area. Members Alex Helbig (drums, lead vocals), Doug Mitchell (guitar, backing vocals), and Steve Weil (bass, backing vocals) are schooled musicians and songwriters whose unique sound includes layered harmonies and complex time signatures.

A winner of the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 13 on the Vans Warped Tour 2009 San Diego [1], Margate has performed on the Comedy Central stage as the house band for a sketch comedy show [2], and received airplay on UCLA campus radio and on KROQ-FM 106.7 as part of the “Locals Only” radio show. [3]

Margate has two full-length, self-produced albums to date. The CD Release Party for their second album On the Other Side (Room57Records, August 2009) was held August 22, 2009 at Molly Malone’s [4] in Hollywood. The song “Time and Time Again” from that album was selected for placement in the indie film George’s Intervention. [5]

Two singles were previously released along with music videos: “In My Life” [6] and “Time and Time Again.” [7] The video for the latter was featured on the Late Night Music Club by Crooks and Liars. Skratch Magazine interviewed the band members in February 2009 [8] as a result of the attention the video received.

“Rising,” from Songs in the Key of Awesome, is featured in the indie feature film Outside Sales; [9] distributed in the major video market in 2008.

In July 2007, Margate garnered a “stay” vote from listeners and the in-audience crowd at the Malibu Inn in after performing on The Frosty, Heidi and Frank Show on FreeFM 97.1.
